what to look for when purchasing upholstered furniture...

  • What you can’t see is the most important part - the frame.  Kiln dried hardwood will not warp or crack with changes in humidity & temperature.  Corners should be reinforced with corner blocks, glued & screwed to ensure stability
  • Padding - lots of it!  This adds to the luxury appearance and comfort of the piece but also extends the life of the fabric by giving it room to move without coming in contact with a hard surface, the frame.  You should not be able to feel the frame on the arms.
  • Loose back pillows should be sewn and filled in channels to avoid shifting and clumping
  • Ask about the density of the foam used in the seating - 2 1/4” foam will provide a certain comfort and wearability
  • Ask about choice in seating, can it be upgraded?  Some people like a firm seat but some people want to “sink in”.
  • Ask about the spring system - this is what will support you for the lifetime of your sofa or chair.  Springs should be 2 1/2 to 3” apart for proper support with some additional reinforcement for added security
  • Is the fabric pattern matched? The pattern of the fabric should run continuously from top to bottom and side to side, through the seams
  • On higher end furniture, the deck (under the seat cushions) should be upholstered in the body fabric
  • REMEMBER - You get what you pay for. If you choose quality, you will get better comfort, and a piece of furniture that will look better longer.
